What is an autoimmune disease?

Autoimmune diseases are where the immune system mistakes the body’s own cells as a threat and attacks them. Our immune system protects our body against harmful substances. For people with an autoimmune disease, the immune system can't distinguish between harmful and healthy cells.

There are more than 80 known autoimmune diseases including type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and lupus. Around 4 million people in the UK are living with at least one – and although women tend to have a slightly stronger immune system, they’re more likely to be diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.
